Define the three terms
Search engine optimisation (SEO) covers improving discovery and usefulness in search. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) emphasises clear responses to questions. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) focuses on how information may be understood and cited in generated answers. These are working industry terms, not three independent switches a website can turn on.
Keep the foundation consistent
Make important information available in readable HTML. Describe services accurately, use consistent company details and organise pages around genuine customer needs. Ensure internal links and canonical URLs are sensible. A separate collection of repetitive “AI pages” is not a substitute for a useful website.
Build answers from expertise
Ask subject specialists to explain scope, prerequisites, limitations and common decisions. Use concrete examples that are labelled as examples. Cite primary sources for externally verifiable claims and retain a review record. A short answer is useful when it removes uncertainty; it is less useful when it strips away an essential qualification.
Avoid visibility promises
Search and AI systems control their own retrieval and presentation. No agency can promise a particular citation or answer position. Structured data should describe visible content accurately. Optional files or special vocabulary do not compensate for missing evidence, weak content or inaccessible pages.
Measure what is observable
Monitor useful search queries, qualified enquiries and available referral sources. Record limitations when tools do not expose all answer interactions. Compare changes over time, but avoid attributing every movement to one edit. The business aim remains helping suitable customers understand the offer and make an informed next step.
Put the guide into practice
Write down your current position, the outcome you want and the constraints you need to work within. Use those notes as the starting point for a focused conversation.
