Understand the purpose
Technical SEO examines whether search systems can access useful pages, understand the intended URLs and process the site reliably. It also looks at technical conditions affecting the user experience. It does not replace useful content or a credible offer. Start by identifying the pages the business actually wants people to discover.
Review crawling and indexation
Inspect robots rules, status codes, canonical tags, sitemap entries and accidental noindex directives. Compare the crawl with available Search Console information. A page appearing in a sitemap is not a promise that it will be indexed. Determine whether exclusions are intentional before treating every excluded URL as a fault.
Check URL changes and duplicates
When pages move, map old URLs to relevant replacements. Avoid redirect chains and redirecting every retired page to the homepage. Investigate inconsistent trailing slashes, parameters and duplicate page versions. The objective is to make the preferred content clear while keeping useful links working.
Inspect performance in context
Review large images, blocking resources, unstable layout and expensive interactions on representative templates. Laboratory tests help diagnose problems, while field data describes real experiences where available. A strong synthetic score alone does not establish that every visitor has a fast experience. Prioritise changes that improve important journeys.
Turn findings into an implementation plan
Each finding should include an affected URL or template, evidence, proposed change, owner and validation method. Group issues by impact and effort. After implementation, rerun the relevant checks and record the outcome. Keep the report concise enough that a developer and business owner can agree what happens next.
